A College for All Learners — Together.

Sterling’s intimate setting, unique course offerings, and experiential focus fosters learning opportunities that empower diverse expressions of intelligence.  Whether you learn best in collaboration, hands-on, or in a more traditional academic setting, Sterling welcomes you.

Overall, Sterling College taught me how I learn and how my brain works.  Education wasn’t accessible to me before I came here.  The hands-on learning, the time in the field, really worked for me.
— Sterling Student

To best serve all students, Sterling faculty work to refine and strengthen their teaching approach to offer a more universal academic design.  This approach is rooted in flexibility, alternative presentation of information, and empowering creative expression and exploration.

As a working college, Sterling allows students to develop hands-on skills across various disciplines, making the college a match for non-traditional learners and students motivated to pursue a particular passion. And when a student’s needs are specific, Sterling has the staff in place to help create a support plan.

Building Off Strengths

Sterling embraces the diversity of student learners that enroll in its classes and programs.  Though we strive for a universal design for instruction we also recognize individual need.  Our goal is to meet students where they are and work collaboratively to clearly communicate, and initiate support for identified needs.   Any student who requests learning support individually consults and collaborates with the Director of Learning Support to create an Accommodation Plan.  The plan is then submitted for approval by our Accommodation and Accessibility Team (The AAT is a small group that represents the three main areas in our learning environment: Academic, Work, and Student Life).  Once a plan is approved for a student it is then communicated on a semester by semester basis, to a specific list of course instructors, and their advisor.  The plan is then securely filed in Sterling’s student information system.

A major focus for how Sterling approaches learning support is to focus on the strengths and intelligences that we all possess.  Accommodations are created not only to support a need but to emphasize and build upon our areas of strength.  The process for creating a learning support plan can be long or short depending on how well each student understands themselves as a learner.  At Sterling, The Director of Learning Support is there to help students get the most out of their time and help ensure a valuable learning experience.

“Sterling believes that diversity in learning styles and intelligences enhance the community as a whole.  We welcome all types of learners and are focused on providing an educational experience that works for all.”
