  • Sterling College is searching for a new colleague to join its faculty in Craftsbury Common, Vermont. We seek a full-time faculty member with a focus on Ecology who can contribute to our small, dedicated learning community. The successful candidate will teach foundational courses in ecology and natural history and additional upper-level courses in one or more of the following areas: agroecology, conservation biology, entomology, environmental education, natural history, soil, or plant science.

    This position would start 1-2 weeks prior to the Fall 2024 semester, in August 2024, and is contingent on funding.

    Position responsibilities will include:

    • Teaching experiential undergraduate courses in the realm of ecology and biological sciences including our required introductory Foundations of Ecology course;

    • Student advising;

    • Supporting students in teaching assistantships, independent studies, and senior year research projects;

    • Serving as a supervisor in our federally designated Work Program;

    • Service on committees and councils;

    • It may also include co-management of the Sterling College Science Laboratory and other duties as assigned by the Dean of Academics.

    Required skills and qualifications for this position include

    • Relevant teaching experience with a demonstrated commitment to interdisciplinary, experiential, field-oriented teaching;

    • Subject matter expertise;

    • Advanced academic credentials and/or substantial relevant practitioner experience;

    • Demonstrated commitment to our mission of ecological thinking and action.

    Desired skills and qualifications include

    • Ph.D. or Masters degree in a relevant field;

    • Field experience, including working at a field station, backcountry travel, or extended fieldwork in remote areas;

    • Wilderness First Responder certification or similar credential.

    Reporting Relationship:

    This position reports directly to the Dean of Academics.

    Work Arrangement:

    This on-site position is based in Craftsbury Common, Vermont.

    Working Conditions & Physical Demands

    • This is an office- and field-based position that requires

      • extended periods of work on a keyboard, on a computer screen, and at a desk.

      • access to high-speed internet.

      • occasionally lifting up to 25 lbs.

      • may work evenings and weekends for special events and/or to meet deadlines.

      • Given the rural setting of the Sterling campus and the experiential, field-oriented nature of our curriculum, the position requires the ability to move across campus in various weather conditions over uneven surfaces.

    This is a 9-month, full-time, permanent position with a salary range of $49,000 - $52,000.
