A Sense Of Place
All incoming students will complete a course entitled, A Sense of Place: Expedition I. In addition to on-campus academics, community orientation, and the Work Program, students will engage in several off-campus experiences. During Fall 2025, this will include one day of trail work along The Long Trail with The Green Mountain Club, a one day hike to summit one of our favorite local mountains, canoe capsize and recovery practice, and Expedition I: a three day overnight trip! For Expedition I, incoming students can choose between one of three trips — backpacking, canoeing, or rock climbing.
-
The Fall 2025 trip dates are either September 9-11th or September 15-17th, depending on which trip you choose.
-
Keep an eye out for an email regarding Expedition coming June 2025. This email will include a link to the trip preferences form. If you can’t find this email, or have trouble filling out the form, please reach out to an admission counselor.
-
Learning to choose the right equipment for your adventure is an essential part of a fun and successful Expedition. We know that walking into an outdoor store can be a daunting experience, but preparing for your course need not feel overwhelming. The below list is designed to help you make the best gear choice for your trip.

Yes, students are permitted to have a vehicle on campus as long as it has been registered and has a parking permit. To request a Sterling College Student Parking Permit, please fill out Parking Request Form. Upon arrival, if you intend to have a car on campus during your time as a student, you will be asked to register that vehicle with the business office and pay a registration and parking fee of $100 for the academic year. You can find more information about vehicles and parking on pages 155-158 of the Student Handbook.
While students are welcome to drive to campus, we ask that all students, both commuter and residential, make a conscious effort to walk to class, farm chores, meals, and other campus activities whenever possible. We believe that reducing vehicle use not only lowers our carbon footprint but also enhances the overall campus experience by promoting a healthier, more connected environment.
We also encourage students to bring alternate modes of transportation, such as bikes! Don’t have a bike, no worries! We have bikes available through a Green Bikes Program.
-
After depositing, you’ll start receiving emails with information about housing. One of the required forms that must be filled out by the deadline of July 15th is the New Student Housing Application.
The New Student Housing Application will assist us in determining your housing assignment. Assignments are determined based on student age, seniority status, family status, veteran status, and medical need at the discretion of Student Life Team. Please note that housing assignments will be made as these forms are completed, so it’s a great idea to get this done as soon as possible!
-
Before registering for classes, you’ll schedule a time to talk to your assigned academic advisor over the phone. After that, you’ll be able to register for classes through your Student Portal. You can browse course offerings and syllabi before registration, and talk about any questions with your advisor!
-
Students with AP credits or credits previously earned at another institution should submit official transcripts for review. Generally, we are able to accept AP scores of a 4 or above for credit, and college credits for classes in which you earned a C or above.

Yes! As a Work College, all of our students will be assigned to a work crew on campus.
Residential students must perform 80 hours of work per semester, 5 hours per week, which reduces their tuition. Time for this is built into Sterling’s weekly schedule. In addition to dish and farm chores, students serve on one of the following crews:
Farm Crew
Kitchen Crew
Community Crew (Community Advisor/Residential Upkeep)
Buildings & Grounds Crew
Admissions Crew
Administrative Crew

Each spring, we host an Accepted Student Day on our campus that allows accepted or deposited students to come check out all our campus has to offer. You’ll get a chance to spend a night in a dorm, eat in our dining hall, sit in on a class, and meet our current students and staff.
If you’re not able to join us for Accepted Student Day, or if you enroll after that event has been held, we would be happy to show you around campus! If you haven’t toured our campus yet, we encourage you to come check us out by scheduling a Campus Walking Tour, or by joining us our next Open House. We don’t want travel expenses to be a barrier for students to visit our campus— if you would like to learn more about travel reimbursement, please contact a member of our admission team!
