Our students went on an extracurricular visit to @breadandpuppet , one of the oldest, nonprofit, political theatre companies in the country. Bread and Puppet operates a press, @breadandpuppetpress , in which they churn out cheap art. Bread and Puppet’s Cheap Art Philosophy and production was born in 1979 when Peter Schumann and his company and friends filled their old schoolbus with hundreds of small pictures painted on scraps of masonite, cardboard, and newspaper. Painted slogans and statements about art and Cheap Art hung on the outside of the bus. Then they drove it to neighboring towns and sold the stuff for 10 cents to 10 dollars. Today Cheap Art is practiced by all kinds of artists and puppeteers all over, and continues to cry out: Art is Not Business! Art Is Food! Art Soothes Pain! Art Wakes Up Sleepers! Art Is Cheap! Hurrah!

Sunday, March 19th, 12:30-3:30 in the Sterling College Repair/Sewing Studio in Strong Hall

This class will cover basic sewn and sticky patching for clothing and gear. No previous sewing knowledge is required. Structured instruction will be followed by open sewing time to use the studio for individual projects, expert repair advice, and chances to try out our specialized industrial sewing machines and repair tools.

A $25 registration donation is encouraged to support the repair program.

We had a blast participating in the BKL Festival held at our neighboring Craftsbury Outdoor Center. 🤩 Sterling College was on-site offering gear repair, and it was a huge success! 🙌🏽 We even had to shut down intake because we got so much gear to fix. 🔧💼

In the Work Program, you learn tools of the trade, such as how to operate industrial kitchen equipment, best practices for operating heavy machinery, and proper body mechanics on the job. You participate in All College Work Day each semester, when all students and staff roll up their sleeves and tackle big projects together.

As you gain field experience, you also earn responsibility. Junior and Senior Crew Leaders run the ecology lab and aspects of the farm. In the Work Program, you’re autonomous but supported.
