Sterling College and New York University’s collaboration on sustainable food systems has led to the recent donation of over 300 food systems related books. These books are a gift of the Marion Nestle Food Studies Collection, Fales Library, NYU to Sterling College.
President Derr said of the donation, “As the exciting and mutually beneficial collaboration between Sterling College and the Food Systems program at New York University continues to unfold, the cookbooks from the Fales Library Collection represent a tangible connection between our two institutions. It is an exciting gift, for which Sterling is grateful, and a manifestation of the shared passion for good food in both of our communities!”
Anne Obelnicki, faculty in Sustainable Food Systems, is thrilled with the book donations. Recently, while perusing the titles, she found several books that particularly interested her.
One such book is entitled The Literary Gourmet. This work examines famous works that include food, and then provide recipes for their preparation, spanning from the Bible, through Boccacio’s Decameron, Wilde’s The Importance of Being Earnest, up to Thomas Mann’s The Magic Mountain. For Nikolai Gogol’s Dead Souls, the recipes include stuffed sturgeon, fish soup, and crayfish soufflé. The section on Dickens’ A Christmas Carol includes roast goose.
All of these books from the NYU collection will be available for use by students and members of the Sterling community. They are currently in the Career Resource Center awaiting cataloging. • —Ariel Droualt ’15
