Applications for the Wendell Berry Farming Program of Sterling College, in Henry County, KY, are being accepted through April 1. This no-tuition, hands-on, undergraduate, sustainable agriculture degree program is open to students who will have earned 60 college credits by Aug. 25, 2019, when the program starts. Applicants must have a strong work ethic, demonstrate a commitment to sustainable farming and a desire to work to strengthen rural communities.
The leading-edge Wendell Berry Farming Program was inspired by iconic American poet, novelist, activist, farmer and Kentucky native Wendell Berry. The Berry Center, in Newcastle, KY, has partnered with Sterling College, a small four-year college specializing in sustainable agriculture and environmental studies. While Sterling is located in rural Vermont, the Wendell Berry Farming Program is firmly rooted and located in Henry County, KY. The program especially welcomes applicants from the Bluegrass State. The no-tuition model helps support graduates to live and farm in rural communities without the burden of college debt.
During the hands-on program, students will study such subjects as Holistic Livestock Husbandry, Draft Animal Power Systems, U.S. Farm and Food Policy, Small Business Management and Whole Farm Planning. Graduates will receive a bachelor’s degree in Sustainable Agriculture from Sterling.
While tuition is free––thanks in large part to a grant from the NoVo Foundation, along with private donations––students will be responsible to pay for room and board.
