The crew lead will supervise a crew of one to two technicians, with occasional assistance from a graduate student from the Bisbing lab, to support a long-term provenance trial (i.e., baby tree garden) by conducting end-of-season measurements at multiple common gardens throughout the Sierra Nevada. Duties include measuring seedling survival and physiological traits of five conifer species, downloading weather station and temperature logger data, and conducting repeated measurements of planting site climatic conditions. The crew lead will be responsible for ensuring adherence to protocols, coordinating travel/sampling logistics, compiling data, and reporting crew work hours.

Other responsibilities include: Use of hand tools and/or chainsaws to remove vegetation around seedlings, application of herbicide under supervision, troubleshoot technical issues with equipment/tools, data entry and quality control, other duties as assigned.

Field work will include hiking long distances with a heavy pack and potentially working during inclement weather. The crew lead must be able to carry a 35lb. pack and be able to occasionally lift 50lbs. The technician will be required to drive a 4WD vehicle on remote forest roads and must hold a valid driverâÂ?ÂTs license. The crew lead should have a minimum of one to two years of field experience in forestry, restoration ecology, or a related field. They should be self-motivated, have strong communication skills, and be able to function without supervision.
The start of the field season will depend on the applicantâÂ?ÂTs availability but will range between August 16th to September 6th and run through early November (weather dependent) for a total of ~10 – 13 consecutive weeks. Pay is $21/hr. and a field vehicle for on-site work will be provided. Non-traditional housing is necessary at most work sites (camping, trailer, etc.). Crew members should expect a dynamic schedule with time spent at multiple research sites throughout the course of the fall season.
