Position: Operations and Communication Coordinator

Hours, Start Date, and Location: This is a salaried, full-time position. Preferred start date is August 1, although a later date would be considered. This is an onsite position in Las Cruces, New Mexico; remote working is not possible.

Reports to: Executive Director

Scope of Position: The Operations and Communication Coordinator is an essential member of the Asombro leadership team who ensures that the organization can bring meaningful and innovative science education to more than 22,000 K-12 students each year. This detail-oriented, exceptional communicator will work with Asombro’s Executive Director and Education Director to (1) oversee daily operations and the office to ensure successful work toward our mission and (2) communicate about Asombro’s science education programs that are delivered to the diverse student and teacher population of New Mexico. This position requires excellent time management, organizational, and written/oral communication skills. The ideal candidate is dedicated to the mission of Asombro, extremely well organized, a problem solver, a team player, and excited to be part of an organization making a difference in the lives of thousands of K-12 students and adults each year.

Major Job Responsibilities:

1)  Coordination of Asombro operations and office (approx. 50% of time) – Major duties include:

Work with Education Director to schedule all classroom/schoolyard science lessons, field

trips, and other programs
Communicate with and schedule volunteers to assist with education programs
Assist Executive Director with bookkeeping and budgets
Supervise undergraduate intern(s), who assist with office and education projects
Work with science education staff members to ensure that they have all the lesson

materials they need
Oversee care and maintenance of office equipment, office supplies, and vehicles
Supervise the routine cleaning and organization of the office and education program

supplies
Other related duties as required
2)  Communication and donor management (approx. 40% of time) – Major duties include:

Create and lead the Asombro external communications strategy, including tools like

newsletters, press releases, social media posts, event and program flyers and brochures,

and Asombro website
Work with other Asombro staff members who write and edit newsletters and update

the Asombro website
Coordinate donor relation activities, including working with the Executive Director to

manage donation campaigns, communicate with and acknowledge donors, and maintain

the donation database
3)  Assist with other Asombro projects, such as science education programs, public events,

collaborative projects with other organizations, and other duties as needed (approx. 10% of time).
Required Experience, Skills, and Education

• Minimum two years of experience in nonprofit or business operations and office administration

Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
Knowledge of (or demonstrated willingness and ability to learn) best practices for

communicating about the mission and programs of a nonprofit organization
Effective team player with excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to communicate professionally, diplomatically, and directly with a wide variety of people, including other staff

members, volunteers, teachers, donors, and partners
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Experience working in a team environment, handling multiple assignments, prioritizing, and

meeting deadlines.
Excellent computer skills and proficiency with office technology and basic software programs

like Word and Excel. Experience with Mac computers a plus.
Ability to do physical work (e.g., ability to lift items up to 30 pounds on infrequent basis)
High school diploma or equivalent (B.S. or B.A. degree in related field is preferred)

Physical Work Environment: The Operations and Communication Coordinator will spend the majority of time in the Asombro office in Las Cruces. Minimal driving of Asombro vehicles may be required.

Organizational Information: The Asombro Institute for Science Education is a 32-year-old nonprofit organization dedicated to increasing natural science literacy through engaging, place-based education. Asombro’s seven staff members help bring our award-winning, hands-on science education programs to more than 22,000 K-12 students, 800 teachers, and 700 other adults annually. Most programs are in- person classroom and schoolyard lessons, but Asombro also hosts field trips at our outdoor classroom facility, the Chihuahuan Desert Nature Park, delivers online learning activities, conducts teacher workshops, and hosts public education events. All Asombro programs are (1) hands-on and inquiry- based, (2) related to current, local research through partnerships with scientists, (3) aligned with Next Generation Science Standards and other national education standards, and (4) designed to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion in science education.

Salary: $40,000 – $44,000/year depending on experience and education

Benefits: Asombro’s generous benefits package includes 10 paid holidays, 14 work days of vacation leave (increasing to 19 days after five years of service), and 8 days of sick leave for each full-time employee. Employees also receive life insurance, paid jury duty, and optional health and vision insurance.
