The Sterling Farm is offering up to six 12 week, 32-hour per week, 6-credit internships focused on managing different aspects of our diversified farm. The internships begin on May 15 and end on Aug 14, with a one week break. All interns are eligible for free room and board at the Farm. Applications are accepted beginning February 15th.
This internship focuses on all aspects of managing a horse powered market garden. The intern will participate in the management of horses necessary to maintain an effective and healthy working team, and managing timely care of the fields and crops. The areas of responsibility will include a range of tasks and learning opportunities. Firstly, the intern will work with the Livestock Manager to maintain oversight of daily care and feeding, readying the horses for daily work, and planning and implementing pasture rotations. Secondly, the intern will help implement the working systems with the horses themselves. This would include two major areas of focus: first, exercising and providing consistent handling and driving of the team(s); secondly, the intern will work with the Garden Manager to implement management of tillage, cultivation, and other farm work with the draft animals, including equipment and implement use and maintenance.
