Students in this pod may enroll in online coursework. Students interested in this pod are also encouraged to enroll in the Expedition Planning Trip during May Intensive.
This pod includes the following courses:
Expedition Planning and Management 3 cr
Expedition Planning and Management will introduce students to knowledge, skills, and risk assessment necessary for effective planning and management of short and extended wilderness expeditions. Course topics include goal setting and researching your own expedition, staff training, health considerations, budgeting and finance, logistics and support, transportation, lodging, energy balance and menu planning, equipment, leadership, expedition behavior, communication, safety, and risk management.
Gear Design and Repair 3 cr
Gear Design and Repair course will give students the hands on tool skills necessary to design, make and care for outdoor gear and equipment. Students will be introduced to the history of gear manufacturing and learn about what goes into material selection and the manufacturing process. Students will also learn hands-on skills to do common gear repair both in and out of field situations. Students will have a larger project to design and make a custom piece of gear to support the expedition for the Expedition Planning and Management Add-on course in the May Intensive.
