Nearly eight weeks have elapsed at the Spencer Farm since my last post, and so much has happened since. I’ve fallen into a routine on the farm, with early mornings, long days, and a distinct sense of fulfillment at the end of each and every day. Recently, we’ve been doing some infrastructural improvements on the farm, and have moved our Tamworth pigs onto a lush, one-acre pasture.

Today, it was finally completed, and I’m left with an exhilarating sense of accomplishment. I’ve been working on many different projects here at the farm, such as mulching, and weeding, but this is the first major project that I have completed, from start to finish, and therefore, I feel a sense of ownership and accomplishment.

This is just one part of the immense learning that’s taken place over the past eight weeks. I’ve really gained an appreciation for the ins and outs of the operation of a sustainable farm.
One particularly joyous aspect of my time at Spencer Farm has been the visits to the Farmers Market. For the past twelve weeks, we’ve been running a Spring CSA, which we distribute at the market in Selma. When we’re out there on Tuesday mornings, I get to speak to our customers, and see the excitement that they have about the healthy, sustainable, food that we are producing here.

I have about two weeks left here, and I’m sure I’ll learn even more in that time. Then, it’ll be time for a vacation. Next stop, India! It’s now the end of the day, a perfect time to sit by the pond, and watch the scenery.
