Sterling College’s School of the New American Farmstead is offering a five-day immersion course for people curious about working with draft animal power for their farm or woodlot. The “Introduction to Teamster Skills: Working Horses and Cattle” course will be held June 10-15, 2018 at the Sterling College campus.
Led by Sterling College Faculty in Sustainable Agriculture, Rick Thomas, and featuring visiting faculty Tim Huppe and John Smolinsky, participants in this course collectively experience the daily rhythm of working on a draft animal powered farm. Upon completing the course, students will have a strong understanding of the opportunities and constraints working cattle and horses bring to a modern farming or logging enterprise.
Sterling was the first college to offer an undergraduate minor in Draft Horse Management and is an excellent place to explore these systems. This course is designed to introduce basic teamster skills and is appropriate for people with no previous experience working with draft animals. This class is being offered through The School of the New American Farmstead (SNAF), Sterling College’s continuing education program.
