Fall 2003: Kitchen starts purchasing Dean’s
Beans, a shade-grown, fair-trade coffee, with influence from a Spring 2003
Systems Thinking project (Alyssa Remy Powers & Israel Kacyvenski)
researching coffee.
Fall 2003: New woodshed built in Tools class with
scavenged metal roofing, logs cut by students with axes and hand cross-cut saws

Fall 2003: Micro wind generator (400 w) installed
by Environmental Science class on off-the-grid campus farm to supplement the PV
system. Funded by Student Activities (senior gift with remaining budget).

student interest, followed through by faculty. Campus use by students and

project accounting for all dorm electrical use, and how to reduce it. About 10%

2002-present: Environmental Science students encouraged to

2002-present: Environmental Science students & faculty
rode bicycles instead of taking a van for 2 field trips (Stream macro-invertebrate
sampling, 3 miles; and off-the-grid house tour, 3 miles). (Adrian Owens)

build manure pit (now compost pit) at McCarthy Barns; Vermont Agency of Natural

1969-1985: Reduced
