Campus Greening Resume

Feb. 2006: Started an e-waste collection “Technotrash.”

Dec. 2005: Sterling College Dining Hall becomes a member of Vermont Fresh Network.


Fall 2005: Utility usage signs for each building posted.

Nov. 2005: “A Small College's Students Take Pride in Growing Much of What They Eat” article in The Chronicle of Higher Education.

Fall 2005: Sustainable Sterling logo and website launched.

Fall 2005: Sterling College becomes a member of the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education.


Fall 2005: Caleb Fisher (’07) organizes students to join National Wildlife Federation ’s Campus Ecology.

Spring 2005: Sterling purchases 7 computer tables from local manufacturer Neudorfer, in Waterbury, VT as a result of the recently published Vermont Wood Products Resource Manual. See article in Summer 2005 newsletter of Vermont Sustainable Jobs Fund.

January 2005: Sterling College becomes a member of the University Leaders for a Sustainable Future.

2004-2005: Sustainability Assessment researched by Christina Erickson, Sustainability Coordinator, and Josh Wilcox (’06).

Sept. 2004: Sustainable Sterling launched; Dedicated position of Sustainability Coordinator.

March 2004: Junk mail reduction project begins – canceling unwanted junk mail for Sterling faculty & staff. (Christina Erickson/Meg Hammond )

Fall 2003: Placement of scrap paper box by main copier in Kane Hall and encouraging faculty/staff to use scrap paper when possible. (Christina Erickson)

Fall 2003: Sterling College signs on to the Conference of New England Governors and Eastern Canadian Premiers’ Climate Change Action Plan. (Jed Williamson/Christina Erickson)

Fall 2003: Kitchen starts purchasing Dean’s Beans, a shade-grown, fair-trade coffee, with influence from a Spring 2003 Systems Thinking project (Alyssa Remy Powers & Israel Kacyvenski) researching coffee.

Fall 2003: New woodshed built in Tools class with scavenged metal roofing, logs cut by students with axes and hand cross-cut saws and a few boards sawed from our own trees. (Adrian Owens)

Fall 2003: Micro wind generator (400 w) installed by Environmental Science class on off-the-grid campus farm to supplement the PV system. Funded by Student Activities (senior gift with remaining budget). (Adrian Owens)

Summer 2003: Summer Environmental Science class – student project accounting for all dorm electrical use, and how to reduce it. About 10% reduction for one week. (Adrian Owens)

2003, 2002: Sawing firewood for Emergency Heating Assistance program with cross-cut saws, hand-splitting. (VISTAs Scott Shope, Meg Hammond)

2002-present: Environmental Science students encouraged to print lab reports, etc. on the blank backsides of used paper. (Adrian Owens)

2002-present: Environmental Science students & faculty rode bicycles instead of taking a van for 2 field trips (Stream macro-invertebrate sampling, 3 miles; and off-the-grid house tour, 3 miles). (Adrian Owens)

Fall 2002: Summer Environmental Science class – student project accounting for all dorm electrical use, and how to reduce it. With a 5% increase for one week once student talked to dorm about conservation. (Adrian Owens)

Early 90s: Soil Conservation Service funds to build manure pit (now compost pit) at McCarthy Barns; Vermont Agency of Natural Resources recycling program funds modified pit to compost area. (Ann Ingerson)

1969-1985: Reduced fuel oil consumption by 50%. (Ned Houston/Steve Williams)  

70s-mid 80s: Fed food scraps to pigs at Kapple Farm.
