Outdoor Recreation

Forest and Trails
The Sterling College main campus includes 75 acres of woodlot, with lean-tos and tent platforms, linked by a series of trails that are available for student use.
Challenge Course
The Challenge Course features a 30’ outdoor climbing wall on the lower campus with three south facing interior surfaces for climbing, including an overhang. There is also a chimney climb on the back. Special lighting allows for evening climbs.
Bouldering Wall
The indoor Bouldering Wall is located in Simpson Hall. The multi-faced wall provides an all-weather recreational activity.
The Craftsbury Outdoor Center is well-known for its sculling, running, and nordic skiing programs. The Center's trail network runs right through Sterling's property. Students are able to ski, run, or bike on the groomed trails at no charge.
Vermont is home to some of the best skiing and riding in the East. Sterling is close to several ski resorts, including Jay Peak, Stowe, Burke, and Smuggler's Notch.
Hiking
There are thousands of miles of hiking trails in Vermont! The Long Trail and Catamount Trail, both of which stretch the length of Vermont, are maintained by volunteers (such as Sterling students) and by the Green Mountain Club. There are also many hiking opportunities in the Vermont State Parks.
Canoeing/Kayaking
There are several lakes, ponds, and rivers surrounding Sterling. Students are often found on Lake Eligo, Little and Big Hosmer Ponds, and the Black River. Remember, we are in the part of the world where the rivers flow north!
Biking
Whether on the surrounding network of doubletrack and singletrack trails, on the many dirt roads, or on the road biking loops, there are plenty of opportunities for biking in the greater Craftsbury area.
Outdoor Equipment
Rental of the college's outdoor equipment is encouraged, with the following guidelines: Canoes -- From May to October, if a student has successfully completed the SS105 course or has demonstrated capability with canoes, then he/she may sign out a canoe, PFD, paddle, and foam roof racks for up to three days for flat water trips.
Camping equipment such as tarps, tents, stoves, fuel bottles, bow saws, foam pads, sleeping bags, and sports gear such as snowshoes and cross-country skis may be rented for a fee and damage deposit by contacting the Equipment Manager.
