New Scholarship Available to NEK Students
A new $3,000 - $6,000 scholarship opportunity for college-bound high school
seniors from Vermont's Northeast Kingdom has been announced by Sterling
College President Will Wootton.
The $100,000 endowment that supports the scholarship, which is guaranteed
throughout the recipient's attendance at the College, was awarded to
Sterling last year by the Gladys Brooks Foundation of New York.
Sterling, with 100 plus students, one of the nation's smallest liberal arts
colleges and the only residential independent college in the three counties
of the Northeast Kingdom - Essex, Orleans, and Caledonia Counties -
specializes in self-designed studies in four broad academic areas:
Conservation Ecology, Circumpolar Studies, Sustainable Agriculture, and
Outdoor Education and Leadership.
"We are delighted to announce this new scholarship and we are deeply
grateful to the Gladys Brooks Foundation for its recognition of the
importance of providing financial help to students and families from the
Kingdom," said Wootton.
Interested students need to apply to Sterling and, to be awarded the
scholarship, have a record that demonstrates academic achievement and
leadership skills. The scholarship is awarded without regard to financial
need, but is based entirely on an applicant's abilities and potential to
succeed at Sterling.
Also to qualify, students must have attended or been eligible to attend high
school in the Northeast Kingdom. Twenty percent of Sterling's students are
Vermonters - a high percent among the States 17 independent colleges.
Interested students should review the application procedures on the
College's website www.sterlingcollege.edu
or call the admissions office at 802-586-7711.
