Northern Studies: Geology and Glaciology

Alaska Geospatial Climate Animations of Monthly Temperature and Precipitation
Recent advances in spatial climate modeling make it possible to view animated monthly maps of Alaska's temperature and precipitation.

Antarctic Climate Evolution (ACE)
ACE is a new, international research initiative to study the climate and glacial history of Antarctica through paleoclimate and ice-sheet modeling investigations, purposefully integrated with geological evidence for past changes.

British Geological Survey (BGS)
The British Geological Survey (BGS) is the world's longest established national geological survey and the UK's premier center for earth science information and expertise.

British Geological Survey (BGS) Information & Data
A tremendous source of geological data, most of it free. Try out their Make-A-Map page, if you are interested in geology and geography of the British Isles.

National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC)
Established by NOAA as a national information and referral center in support of polar and cryospheric research, NSIDC archives and distributes digital and analog snow and ice data. The center also maintains information about snow cover, avalanches, glaciers, ice sheets, freshwater ice, sea ice, ground ice, permafrost, atmospheric ice, paleoglaciology, and ice cores. For snow and ice data, visit the site IMS Daily Northern Hemisphere Snow and Ice Analysis at 4 km and 24 km Resolution

International Association of Sedimentologists (IAS)
The International Association of Sedimentologists (IAS) was founded in 1952 with the goal to promote the study of sedimentology and the interchange of research, particularly where international cooperation is desirable.

International Commission on Snow and Ice (ICSI) The International Commission on Snow and Ice (ICSI) is concerned with the study of snow and ice in all its forms, that is, with glaciology. The subject is broad and is connected with many different areas of geophysics, including hydrology, meteorology, oceanography and planetary physics.

International Glaciological Society (IGS)
The International Glaciological Society was founded in 1936 to provide a focus for individuals interested in practical and scientific aspects of snow and ice, and is hosted by Scott Polar Research Institute.Includes contents for Journal of Glaciology and Annals of Glaciology.

International Quaternary Association (INQUA)
INQUA, the International Union for Quaternary Re-search, was founded in 1928 by a group of scientists seeking to improve understanding of environmental change during the glacial ages through interdisciplinary research. Includes back copies of the society newsletter, Quaternary Perspectives, from 1998 and a link to Quaternary International, the journal of the society.

Quaternary Research Association (QRA)
The Quaternary Research Association is an organization comprising archaeologists, botanists, civil engineers, geographers, geologists, soil scientists, zoologists and others interested in research into the problems of the Quaternary.  The majority of members reside in Great Britain, but membership also extends to most European countries, North America, Africa and Australasia.

Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research (SCAR)
The Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research (SCAR) is an inter-disciplinary committee of the International Council for Science (ICSU), charged with initiating, developing and coordinating high quality international scientific research in the Antarctic region, and on the role of the Antarctic region in the Earth system. The scientific business of SCAR is conducted by its Standing Scientific Groups which represent the scientific disciplines active in Antarctic research and report to SCAR.
