Sterling College is LGBTQ-friendly
A healthy ecosystem has plenty of diversity, and that’s what we’re working to cultivate at Sterling College. Equity is a core value of our community, and we welcome, support, and celebrate students of all races, abilities, socioeconomic backgrounds, gender identities and sexual orientations.
Within the Sterling community, we believe everyone should have equal access to community resources and opportunities. While not always the case, inequity is most commonly associated with groups that have experienced discrimination related to their race, ethnicity, nationality, language, religion, socioeconomics, gender, gender presentation, sexual orientation, or disabilities. Equity implies a need for fairness (not necessarily equality) in the distribution of resources, and the entitlement of everyone to an engaging, supported, and meaningful educational experience.
Sterling College Commitment to Equity
We believe that all people deserve to be treated with respect and dignity, and that our community is strengthened through diversity. Sterling College is committed to creating and maintaining a community which:
- Is free from racism, sexism, homophobia, and other prejudices
- Is free from the weight of hate, discrimination and fear
- Promotes and fosters physical and emotional safety
- Fosters civil and respectful dialogue
Sterling College is LGBTQ-friendly. We are one of the country’s approximately 200 colleges and universities participating in the Campus Pride Index, the premier national LGBTQ benchmarking tool to create safer, more inclusive campuses. Sterling College earned 4 stars out of a total five stars for 2016-2017.
Sterling College received especially high marks for its LGBTQ housing and residence life, recruitment and retention efforts, policy inclusion, and student life.
Transition related health and surgical care for transgender students
Sterling College is fully committed to making its campus a welcoming and safe space for students who are considering, or have embarked, on gender transition. We are frequently asked whether the health insurance plan offered to students by the College covers transition-related health and surgical care.
Sterling’s plan is offered through Commercial Travelers/National Guardian Life, which includes specific guidelines for coverage of such needs. A copy of these guidelines is available for your review.
Sterling College Vision
At Sterling College we embrace our rural location as a defining characteristic and strive to foster a community in which people of all backgrounds and identities feel at home, where differences are embraced, and individuals take responsibility for furthering the dignity of all.
“We believe in the transformative power of community, and we model that belief by ensuring that we are free from the weight of hate, discrimination, and fear. Each of us is committed to furthering the dignity of all, through our programs, policies, and relationships.” —Favor Ellis, Dean of Community
The Sterling College Community
We practice community governance here, which ensures a dynamic and inclusive process of growth and decision making. You will have the opportunity to help shape and sustain Sterling College through active participation in committees, councils, and task forces. All members of our community engage in restorative community, solve problems, create policy, assist in hiring faculty and staff, propose and review new courses, evaluate work program positions, and even choose the coffee we serve in the dining hall.
We pride ourselves in our long-standing tradition of Community Meeting. Every Wednesday we come together in a circle, face to face, to discuss issues, raise awarenesses, share announcements, and authentically appreciate each other and all the hard work we do together, every day, in support of each other, our ecology, and our community.
Housing at Sterling College
You will have the chance to create community in your residence hall, too. The division of genders by residence all depends on the student resident population and their needs. Because of the size of our community, we can ensure all residents feel comfortable and at home.
