Sterling's professors work, learn, and
serve with students in many ways—not just in the classroom.
From the Sterling Farm, to nearby Bear Swamp, to field programs
in
distant
lands
such as Labrador and northern Japan, faculty members share their
knowledge and problem solving skills as they work alongside students.
They cooperate in running the outdoor components of programs—accompanying
students on Winter Expedition and other adventures in out-of-class
learning. They schedule chores, eat in the dining hall, and attend
weekly Community Meetings. On weekends, faculty members lead
hikes, ski treks, and other outdoor activities.
This commitment to joint effort is grounded
in the belief that professors should do more than merely impart
information. Effective
teaching also must demonstrate—by working together with
students every day—what can be achieved when we challenge
ourselves to the full extent of our individual abilities and
treat learning as a lifelong process.
Sterling's professors are a surprisingly diverse
group, with broadly ranging academic backgrounds and teaching
styles. They
are unified by an affinity for small-town life, by a strong
interest in relating human experience to natural resources, and
by determination
to work with students as whole people. The Sterling College teaching community is made up of 15 full time and 30 adjunct faculty members. Six of our faculty members are featured below.
