Eric and Hannah discuss energy use

and Eric discuss energy use on campus

Eric Ellison, a recipient of the Environmental Steward Scholarship and a native of Boulder, Colorado, enrolled at Sterling College in the fall of 2007. Through Sterling’s Work College Program he works as the Sustainable Sterling Assistant and helps to coordinate activities that foster awareness and action on issues of energy conservation and sustainability on campus. As part of his work this semester Eric organized candlelight dinners in the dining hall to help the College conserve energy as well as inform community members of electricity use and increase awareness around usage.

The candlelight dinners were received with mixed reactions. Some found them to be fun and maybe even romantic while others weren’t quite sure where the lights had gone. Even Eric had to admit “The candles were a little bit dimmer than I expected.”  But his efforts have not gone un-noticed.

Eric’s candlelight dinners helped to remind us all about the things we take for granted every day. It’s easy to dismiss small community based sustainability efforts when our larger global community is facing climate change and natural resource depletion. Even at a place like Sterling we can always do more to create a more sustainable future.
