AEE Award

Sterling College Receives Top Award

Sterling College has been selected as the Association for Experiential Education's organizational member of the year. The Association for Experiential Education (AEE) is a nonprofit, professional membership association dedicated to the promotion and support of experiential education. AEE has over 1,300 members in 30 countries from Canada and Mexico to Hong Kong and Japan. Bob MacArthur, long standing member of AEE, nominated Sterling for the member of the year award. In his nomination letter he wrote:

"Sterling is a small place, but its influence is large. With a curriculum that incorporates [Kurt] Hahn's pillars of adventure, service and craftsmanship, a student body grounded in experiential education and a faculty that is actively engaged in AEE as well as the world beyond the campus, Sterling more than meets the criteria for the award."

Representatives from Sterling received this honor at the 35th Annual International AEE Conference in Little Rock, Arkansas.

Conference Inspires Sterling Students to Take Action

Vermont Campus Compact, a coalition of Vermont Colleges and Universities dedicated to providing service learning and civic engagement on their campuses, held its 8th annual conference in November. Six students represented Sterling College at the conference. The students listened to keynote speakers and attended workshops on topics such as Livable Wages and Economic Inequality, How to Build and Use a Bicycle Powered Generator, and Campus/Community Action Center: Explore Strategies for Putting Your Ideas into Action. It is no surprise that students returned to campus and took action.

Matt Hawley ’09 of Jamestown, Missouri, and Jack Powell ’10 of Vershire, Vermont, brainstormed multiple ways for Sterling students to become more involved in issues affecting our world and presented them at the weekly Community Meeting. Matt’s inspiration was clear as he welcomed his peers to take action, “You don’t necessarily have to start something new, just get involved.”

New piglets arrive on the Sterling Farm.

Piglets Arrive in Time for Fall Open House

The Sterling College community welcomed 11 new piglets to our farm on November 9th, 2007 while we were finishing up preparations for our Fall Open House on November 10th. The piglets are a cross between Tamworth and Gloucestershire Old Spot breeds. Even the beautiful weather, the delicious food and the breathtaking views from the farm could not compete with this Open House highlight of the day.
