Coordinator – Yale Sustainable Food Project

General Purpose:

Serve as the Program Coordinator for The Yale Sustainable Food Project as Lazarus Fellow. Run all educational events and programs for the Yale Sustainable Food Project.

This position gives a recent Yale College graduate the opportunity to work in the field of sustainable food and agriculture, to build professional and leadership skills and to create educational programs at Yale about sustainable food and agriculture.

 Position Description:

  • Plan and execute a series of educational events each semester with the aim of engaging Yale undergraduates in issues related to food, agriculture and sustainability. These events happen regularly throughout the semester (roughly once per week), with a variety of topics and formats. In the past, types of events have included: guest lectures, workshops, films, field trips and panel discussions. Generate ideas and content for the series, plan and organize events for the series, build partnerships with relevant organizations within the university and oversee execution of events. Responsible for the success of the series, including content, participation, operations and budget. Manage and oversee student employees to help with the planning and execution of the series.
  • Direct the Harvest program, a pre-orientation program in which upperclassmen leaders take groups of incoming freshmen on 5-day trips to local, organic farms in August. Oversee selection of student leaders, direct student leader training throughout the year (for approx. 30 student leaders), generate content for and maintain the website, oversee the program's budget and ensure the smooth running of trips in August for approximately 70 incoming freshmen. Harvest is an educational program which introduces incoming freshmen to the Yale Farm, the Sustainable Food Project and sustainable agriculture and farming in New England . Responsible for the success of the program, including strong leader training, well organized trips and high student participation.
  • Organize a conference, occurring once every two years. This is a major project with the aim of meeting some need in the field of education or advocacy related to food, agriculture and sustainability, as well as forging partnerships and connections with other organizations and individuals outside of Yale. Responsible for the planning of the conference from start to finish, including: conceptualizing the purpose and theme of the conference, creating partnerships with outside organizations, inviting speakers and attendees and planning all logistics.
  • Work with one of the directors of the Sustainable Food Project to increase academic study and engagement with food and agriculture at Yale. This includes meeting with professors, deans and graduate students to encourage and assist in the development of courses and the hiring of faculty in the field.
  • Be deeply involved in planning and running educational activities at the Yale Farm. Oversee educational programming during the summer for the Yale Farm summer interns, including classes, field trips and workshops. Design and organize a series of courses on sustainable farming during the winter months for Yale students interested in learning more about the theory and practice of sustainable agriculture. Organize workshops and events centered around the hearth oven at the Yale farm, on topics such as bread baking, fruit preserving, etc. Run some workdays at the Yale Farm during the academic year and the summer, involving direction and teaching of volunteers and interns. Give tours of the Yale Farm to visitors whose purpose to the farm is academic or educational, both from within the university and from outside (e.g. Yale classes, high school classes, classes from other schools, etc.).
  • Manage 15-20 student employees over the course of the year, and create curriculum and professional development opportunities for all student employees who work at the Sustainable Food Project. Act as the conduit of communication between the Sustainable Food Project and student organizations on campus, providing support and guidance to student groups related to food and agriculture.

 Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree and one to two years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Deep interest in a career or lifelong activities linked to the sustainable food and agriculture.
