Craftsbury Common and Beyond

common

Craftsbury Common is a truly special place, and Sterling students love living here.

A quintessential Vermont village, Craftsbury Common is one of five settlements that make up the town of Craftsbury (total population 1,300). On the surface it seems like little about Craftsbury has changed in generations, but Craftsbury Common and the surrounding villages have an authentic vibrancy that is often missing in other "historic" towns.

The Common itself, an open green space surrounded by a white picket fence, is often a venue for town-wide events such as concerts by the Craftsbury Chamber Players. In addition to the Sterling campus, Craftsbury Common includes the Craftsbury Public Library, Craftsbury Academy, and the Art House Cafe. From May to October there is a local Farmer's Market on the Common every Saturday (in the winter the market happens once a month, in Sterling College's Simpson Hall). Down the hill in Craftsbury Village, there is Pete's Greens, an organic vegetable farm, two General Stores, as well as The Music Box, which offers folk music concerts and other programs.

The Craftsbury Outdoor Center, located in North Craftsbury, is famous for the finest cross-country ski trails in New England, and also maintains trails for mountain biking, running, and snowshoe expeditions. In the summertime, the Outdoor Center is a prime destination for competitive rowers.

Hardwick

About 10 miles away, Hardwick has restaurants, two grocery stores, the Galaxy Bookshop, and the Buffalo Mountain Food Co-op. In recent years Hardwick has received national media attention as the hub of a sustainable food system, with businesses such as Claire's Restaurant and High Mowing Seeds inspiring a rennaissance of local agriculture.

Morrisville

A slightly larger town then Hardwick, Morrisville is about 20 miles away and has many restaurants and stores, a hospital, an outdoor store, and a movie theater.

Greensboro

About 8 miles away is Greensboro, home to Willey's General Store, where if you can't find it, you don't need it. The renowned Circus Smirkus is located in Greensboro as well.

Northeast Kingdom

The entire area of northeastern Vermont is known as the Northeast Kingdom, a sparsely populated area with great diversity of wildlife and wild lands.
