Digging Deep Into Solid Waste: An Article by Sterling Student Michael Apicella

Sterling College student Michael Apicella was recently featured in The Hardwick Gazette for his article, “Schaper Encourages Digging Deep into Solid Waste.” The piece includes an interview with Erika Schaper, Outreach Coordinator for the Lamoille Regional Solid Waste Management District.

In the article, Erika discusses the state of waste management in Vermont, emphasizing the shared responsibility we all have in addressing the issue. “With much growth and development,” she notes, “waste management has become a fundamental part of life—even if we don’t realize it.”

Michael’s article was developed as part of a Science and Communication course taught by Dr. Gustavo Requena Santos, Faculty in Ecology. The course focuses on connecting science to everyday life through storytelling and effective communication. Students explore tools, strategies, and best practices for communicating scientific concepts to a broad audience.

Over several weeks, Michael and his classmates conducted research, conducted interviews, revised drafts, and incorporated feedback—culminating in the article’s publication.

Reflecting on the experience, Michael emphasized the importance of collaboration. “Sending emails to people I don’t know has allowed me to open up and network with new people,” he said. “It grows my perception of the community. I get to learn about how it works, and about things people might overlook or miss.”

Congratulations to Michael on a thoughtful and well-crafted article!
