Spend 10 days studying honey from hive to flask by taking both the “Pollinators, Beekeeping, and Products from the Hive” course and “Wild Mead.” The School of the New American Farmstead is offering a 10% discount for students that want to bundle these two complementary courses. Enrolling in this pair of courses provides an immersive educational experience through which students will learn and practice the fundamentals of small-scale organic beekeeping. Coursework will cover location and equipment requirements, basic honey bee biology, presence and mindfulness in the bee yard, and non-toxic pest and disease control.  Having gained knowledge and built confidence as beekeepers, students will then learn abouts a range of products from the hive, including pollen, propolis, bee venom, royal jelly, honey bee larvae and beeswax products. Students will also learn to add value to an already desirable product — raw honey — by practicing natural approaches to making mead and other honey based beverages and exploring opportunities for the modern mazer.

Wild Mead: Traditional Fermented Honey Beverages (June 5-9, 2017)

Make honey-based fermented beverages with techniques that have been utilized by ancient cultures since the first discovery of bubbling honey. This course will equip and inspire homestead mazers and aspiring beverage entrepreneurs to transform a staple product of the diversified farmstead—raw honey—into delicious, high-value meads and specialty non-alcoholic beverages.  Click here to learn more about the course.
