Leland Peterson has a background in fine arts, psychology and art therapy, learning photography, printmaking, drawing and painting at Columbia College, the Art Institute of Chicago and Goddard College. He has been painting and exhibiting art since 1980. He designed, implemented and directed the Creative Arts Therapies Program at Concordia University and is one of the founders of the Centre for the Arts and Human Development, a research, training and service center at Concordia University. He has taught art at universities and colleges before teaching courses at Sterling College. He has exhibited work in Chicago, San Francisco, Montreal and Vermont.

He currently resides in East Hardwick where he maintains a studio, but prefers to work in plein air. In addition to painting and teaching art at Sterling College, he is a practicing Board Certified Art Therapist and holds a concurrent appointment as Professional Adjunct in the Creative Arts Therapies Program at Concordia University in Montreal, Quebec.
