Mountains and Mesas
July 21-August 17, 2014
This course is now full. We recommend you look at one of our Outdoor Education classes this summer: Advanced Flat-Water Canoeing, Backcountry Climbing in the Northeast, or Essentials of Bicycle Touring.
This is a wilderness field program; this program has three courses that are taught as students immerse themselves in the breathtaking scenery and rich cultural history of the American Southwest.
“Natural History of the Southern Rockies” explores the vegetation and flora of mountain forest and alpine biomes, as well as elements of mountain geography and the geologic and glacial history of the region.
“Mountain Expedition Skills” trains students in all aspects of trip design and implementation. Students will learn, practice, and hone skills such as minimum impact camping techniques, map reading and navigation, equipment maintenance, and more.
“Ancestral Lifeways of the Southwest” is an immersion into the culture of the ancient peoples of the Southwest. Students will visit ancient Pueblo sites and explore the multiple overlays of culture in the four corners region of the Southwest. Students will also manufacture cordage, baskets, firemaking tools, and preserved traditional foods.
