Special Topics in Humanities: John Muir's Range of Light

This course is a field-based exploration of the life and legacy of John Muir with emphasis on his work in the Sierra Nevada of California. Topics include Muir’s biographical background, his intensive explorations of the Yosemite and adjacent Sierra Nevada from 1868-1878, his development of a philosophy of wilderness, and his later efforts towards preservation of the Sierra Nevada landscapes. Course format includes lectures, readings and discussions, as well as on-site visits to the Yosemite wilderness locations that were inspirational to Muir.
