A Reverence for Wood

  • Semester: Spring
  • Course Number: HM215
  • Instructors: Nathan Skorstad
  • Credit: 2

Course Description

This course is designed to give students an understanding of the fundamental elements of basic woodworking. This will be accomplished by planning, building, and exhibiting a specific woodworking project of the individual student’s choice.  The students will be introduced to project planning, layout, assembly, and finishing. The students will learn the safe and proper use of hand and power tools. Basic joinery and its appropriateness will be discussed. Being able to accurately mark, cut, and assemble a project will be key to success.  Time management is emphasized greatly in this course. Students will need to spend non-class hours in the shop in order to complete their individual projects. Through this process it is hoped that the students will gain an appreciation not only for the wood itself, but also of the tools and techniques required in woodworking.
