Economics and the Environment

  • Semester: Spring
  • Course Number: SS210
  • Instructors: Ann Ingerson
  • Credit: 3

Course Description

Economic forces have always affected environmental conditions and the well-being of people, but the vastly expanded scale of economic activity in recent centuries makes its influence pervasive. This course examines how our current economic system evolved, how it affects people and the ecosystem, what works and what doesn't, and what we can do about it – from international, national and local public policies to grassroots alternatives. A combination of readings, other media, individual and group assignments, and class activities will introduce concepts, explore alternative viewpoints, and deepen our understanding of current events.
