This field course is an experiential immersion into the material culture of ancient peoples of the American Southwest. We will visit ancient Puebloan sites such as Bandalier National Monument and Mesa Verde National Park and explore the multiple overlays of culture in the four corners region of the Southwest, emphasizing subsistence systems and their resulting lifeways among the Puebloan and Athabascan peoples. Similtaneously, we will manufacture cordage, containers, packframes, baskets, firemaking tools, cutting edges, food procurement devices and preserved traditional foods and use these materials on field outings.
