Senior Applied Research Project

Fourth-year students return to campus to share their diverse experiences, continue their studies with a more global focus, and prepare for their Senior Applied Research Project. The Senior Applied Research Project is an integrated learning experience, often carried out as a group within each major, in which students develop and apply the theoretical knowledge necessary to tackle a real problem in their field of study.

  • A student majoring in Outdoor Education and Leadership might design a program for a recreation center, including descriptions of activities, defining needed facilities, determining staffing requirements, researching legal issues, and proposing a pricing structure.
  • A Sustainable Agriculture student might focus on development plans for a conserved farm, including mapping soils and vegetation, investigating community needs, designing an integrated agricultural system, and researching marketing opportunities.
  • Conservation Ecology students might undertake a cooperative project with an agency such as the U.S. Forest Service that would require knowledge of field techniques for data gathering, policy guidelines, legal history, and formal bureaucratic procedures.

By engaging in an actual enterprise, students begin to build a bridge between their college studies and the practical applications that may constitute their future work.
