The Langdon Street Cafe

There is a hip, yearling café in Montpelier, Vermont. The Langdon Street Café, a funky, artsy gathering place, drew many Sterling College students to Montpelier throughout its first year. What was the draw? Live music ranging from Irish and old-time sessions to reggae and blues bands, organic coffee, tea, local and organic sweets and eats, and good company. The Café is a collectively owned business; it is owned and operated by a group of people that make decisions without the construct of a hierarchy. Everyone’s voice is heard and the workload is shared among all. The staff and patrons of Langdon Street Café are committed to serving and consuming local and organic products because they believe in supporting the local economy and the environment.

The Café is also a gallery space supporting local artwork. Sterling's own Meg Hammond, Faculty Member and Assistant Director of the Work College Program, organizes the art bookings. (She is also a co-owner of the Café). Meg sees her work at the Langdon Street Café as harmonious with her work at the College. Both the café and the Work College Program emphasize community involvement and sharing the workload. The fact that a group of students volunteered to build, sand, and finish a seventeen-foot countertop for the Café is a great example of how the two organizations mesh. Additionally, there is a commitment on behalf of both the Café and the College to serve local and organic foods. Of course, it is also a great place for Sterling College students to share ideas and dialogue with Montpelier community members. As Meg puts it, "The Café motivates fun!" It is an inspirational venue for those interested in local music, local art, local food, and local people. See you there! (Back to the August E-Newsletter).
