Continued...Faculty Spotlight: Mitch Hunt, Farm Manager

At Sterling College, Mitch continues to teach history within the context of agriculture in U.S. Agricultural Policy. Currently, the class is exploring the connection between current and past agricultural policies. He explains, as students study the Farm Bill, “It’s important to understand its history—how it evolved—in order to engage in meaningful dialogue about it’s future.” Mitch enjoys helping students explore the history of agriculture.

Animal husbandry and livestock management is Mitch’s specialty. Through Agricultural Techniques I and II, students gain insight into handling livestock and understanding animal behavior. Mitch teaches sustainable techniques in sheep breeding, shearing, and lambing; livestock housing and fencing; rotational grazing; and starting chicks, to name a few.

Agricultural Design focuses on full farm planning. Holistic management and permaculture principles form the basis for students to incorporate ecological, economic, and social factors into their agricultural planning. Practice in site analysis and graphic representation are also explored. Mitch’s input in this course centers on farm financing—budgeting and revenue generation.

Mitch enjoys working at Sterling College because he has the opportunity to manage a farm, but also teach people about his passion to embrace farming practices that promote balanced agroecosystems.
