Continued...The Game of Logging Comes to Sterling College
Sterling College hosted the GOL Level 1 certification course in the woodlot behind the Sterling barns. A diverse group of men, women, and young adults from both inside and outside the Sterling community packed a lunch, put on their warmest, rugged clothes and marched into the Sterling woodlot laden with gas and oil cans, blaze orange chainsaws, peaveys, axes, wedges, and other assorted tools of the trade.
At the end of the day it was clear to all why the GOL has earned such a first-rate reputation among loggers, land owners, and the forest products industry. The techniques are efficient, safe, and tried. People from commercial loggers to those who had never started a chainsaw before had a great day in the woods. We were all heartened by the knowledge that we had learned a new set of skills that would enable us to safely harvest what we need from the forest.
