Continued...Who Goes Here? Andrew Karajgi '09

Andrew’s experience at Ramapo exceeded his expectations. When asked what he gained from this internship he said, “I learned a lot more about the decision making process in the outdoors and how to prioritize things a lot better.” Andrew also learned how to pick and choose battles with kids who have serious behavioral issues, “I learned quickly what to allow and what not to allow, as well as how to go about talking with them.” He also explained that many of the older campers were much taller and bigger than he was and that he had to find ways of gaining respect verbally through positive reinforcement and encouragement. Andrew hopes to return to Ramapo for Children so he can strengthen the skills he gained during his internship.

Currently, Andrew is studying in India with the Sterling College Mountain Cultures Semester, a semester that studies the differences in cultural views towards natural and human resources. His interest to go on this trip stems from his family roots; his father grew up in the Bangalore region of India, a city of approximately 6.1 million people. Andrew has always wanted to visit the country where his dad grew up but never had the opportunity to do so before coming to Sterling. “Although we are not visiting the same region that my dad grew up in, I am still excited to be a part of the trip and experience a part of my roots.” Click here to read the Mountain Cultures Semester Travel Log.
