The Sterling Farm
The Sterling College Farm offers two wind and solar-powered barns, pastureland, an acre of certified organic vegetable and herb gardens, a glass greenhouse, a movable hoop house, and fruit trees. The McCarthy Barns house a diverse animal population including cattle, sheep, poultry, pigs, goats, and draft horses. Snowpea, the cat, is the official resident mouser. The barns were designed by a parent of an alumnus (who also designed the library), and were built by students and alumni during a summer work session and reunion weekend in 1989. The summer of 1998 the 40th reunion crew put up the horse shed and compost roofs. The recent addition of a small wind turbine and various modifications to inside spaces make the barns very functional for teaching as well as day-to-day uses.
The greenhouse and hoop house, located behind Simpson Hall, extend the growing season for vegetables and herbs at the College. Throughout the summer and into the fall, the gardens and greenhouses are filled with diverse crops, including several heirloom varieties. Students enrolled in the Summer Farm Semester have grown crops for seed for a local organic seed company. On the farm, we strive to use sustainable methods and integrate plant and animal systems.
