Tomás Kalmar enjoys helping people from many walks of life feel good about their ability to communicate mathematical ideas. For four years, Tomás was part of the Multidisciplinary Founding Faculty at California State University Monterey Bay where he helped launch the Institute for Mathematical Sciences and Applications as well as the Institute for Human Communication. He is currently working on a pilot study of religious metaphors in the discourse of mathematics education reform. He has worked as a community organizer and revolutionary educator in Mexico, the United States, and Australia (where, in 1974, he organized Paulo Freire’s visit to Sydney and served as his interpreter). His publications include Learning Community (Sydney, 1974) and Illegal Alphabets and Adult Biliteracy (Mahwah NJ, 2001). He loves to yodel whenever he gets the chance. Tomás and his wife, Bridget, live nearby with their dogs Chueco and Chucha.
