For more than 30 years, Ann Spearing has taught plant science, environmental science, biology, and chemistry. She has a strong interest in the physiological responses of plants to physical aspects of the environment. In fact, her early work with Sphagnum was one of the first to show a biochemical basis for differentiating species. Ann’s work spans species from algae to sugar maple. In her tenure as a university graduate dean, Ann developed and evaluated graduate programs in a variety of disciplines, supported student research, and cultivated programs for minority and international students. Her international experiences include work in most francophone African countries. Most recently, Ann co-developed a field study program on tropical ecosystems in Belize. Non-science interests include comparative linguistics, multicultural studies, music, and spirituality/philosophy of religions. Ann’s variety and depth of experiences strengthen her advising ability as she supports students with their Senior Applied Research Projects. Ann and her family enjoy cross-country skiing, kayaking, and canoeing.
