M.Ed, Environmental Science, Plymouth State College, 2002 • B.A., Engineering Sciences and Environmental Studies, Dartmouth College, 1990

Over the past thirteen years Adrian Owens has taught a variety of courses at Sterling College. He values course content that students can put into immediate use to improve their lives, reduce environmental impact, and deepen their love for the natural world. Currently his teaching includes outdoor challenge and skills courses and Environmental Science. Adrian’s Masters thesis found a correlation between Common Loon chick survival on Vermont lakes and the fish species present in those lakes. This experience strengthened his commitment to introducing mathematics and its relationship to environmental concepts. His out-of-the-classroom life parallels his teaching. He challenges himself in local running, cross-country skiing, or multi-sport races; he lives in the solar-powered house he built with his wife Allison Van Akkeren, a fellow Sterling College faculty member. Their son Kestrel can often be seen commuting with them by foot, snowshoes, skis, or bicycle.
