The Work College Program
"Doing chores" has
always been a vital part of the Sterling College tradition. The
ethics
of
work
fits well
with our mission, especially
as we seek to educate the whole person toward a more satisfying
and productive life. We believe
that connecting people directly to their support system also
fosters greater care for the environment at large.

In addition to fulfilling academic responsibilities,
students function as integral members of the work force of the
college.
They are employed an average of six hours a week in one of
50 different jobs in the Work College Program. In exchange for
work,
students are eligible to earn a minimum $1,550 in tuition and
book credit. Many students earn more than that amount by doing
additional work. For example, students may be awarded an additional
$525 tuition credit matched by income earned on their off-campus
internships.
Other advantages of expanded work crew requirements
include:
- Work experience teaches problem solving and fosters
creativity.
- Students learn a wider variety of work-place skills.
- The value and dignity of all work is emphasized.
- Our sense of community and common endeavor is enhanced.
- More students working means more work gets done.
- Work commitments may be used for service outside the Sterling
community.
- By doing the work of the College ourselves, we keep the overall
cost of tuition down.
The Work College Program is designed to play
an integral part in the democratic atmosphere of Sterling College.
It allows
students to take personal initiative. It also gives them
a chance to explore
possible career interests. Most importantly, the Work College
Program helps students prepare for life in the working world
out ahead . . . but it is also a way to learn about life
as it is lived right here, right now, on the Sterling College
campus. |
