Folk Art Workshop Series

Fall 2008

Open to the Public

Folk Art Workshops
Sterling College is excited to host its seventh Folk Art Workshop Series. The goal of the series is to pass on the traditional knowledge, arts, and crafts of the region. This spring we are delighted to offer workshops which both explore a sense of independence through practical land-based skills, and celebrate community through music and dance. Come spend an afternoon or a weekend creating beautiful and useful crafts, or hone your skills working with the plants and animals of northern Vermont!

The Fall series includes the following workshops:

  • Herbal Remedies - with Loraine Janowski and Flower Nicole
    Novemeber 9th • 12:00-5:00pm • Dunbar Hall • $30.00

Participants will learn about the medicinal properties of local herbs and, weather permitting, collect them. They will also get hands-on experience making salves, lip balms, dream pollows, tea blends, and cooking with roots.

  • Shape Note Sing - with with Heidi Wilson and friends
    November 15h • 4-5:30pm • Dunbar Hall • FREE

Shape note singing is an American folk tradition of singing hymns and gospel songs from books using shaped note heads to help the singer read the music more easily. The music has a distinctive open and modal sound, and the singing is usually exuberant, rhythmic and full of feeling. Come and learn how to sing in this tradition. Anyone is welcome, regardless of perceived singing ability.

  • Pack Basket Making - with Jody Stoddard
    November 16th • 12pm-5:30pm • Dunbar Hall • $70.00

We will be weaving medium-sized Adirondack style pack baskets made with strong, flexible rattan reed, wooden base and runners, and a woven cotton harness.
